The Magic of Uttarayan in Ahmedabad

Kite Festival 2025
Kite Festival 2025

January 13th, 2025, was yet another unforgettable day at the International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad. As someone who has been attending this event every year, I can confidently say that each visit feels like the first—filled with wonder, joy, and a sense of belonging. This year was no different, and the festival once again proved to be a vibrant celebration of life and culture.

A Festival That Brings the World Together

As I arrived at the Sabarmati Riverfront, I was greeted by a breathtaking sight: the sky adorned with kites of every shape, size, and color imaginable. The International Kite Festival, which started in 1989, has become a global event, attracting participants from countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, the USA, Japan, and Italy. This year, the colorful wau-balang kites from Malaysia, rokkaku fighting kites from Japan, and China's majestic flying dragons were just a few of the masterpieces gracing the skies.

Arriving at the Festival

Reaching the venue early gave me the chance to take in the buzzing energy of the crowd. Families, friends, and tourists from all walks of life had gathered to celebrate Uttarayan. The excitement in the air was contagious as the first kites took flight, marking the start of a day to remember.

My Day at the Kite Festival

A Taste of Gujarat: Food and Crafts

Food is a huge part of any celebration, and the Kite Festival is no different. The aroma of Gujarati delicacies filled the air, drawing me towards the food stalls. I savored hot undhiyu, crispy fafda, and sweet jalebi, each bite reminding me of why I love coming back year after year. The craft stalls were equally captivating, showcasing the artistry of traditional kite-making. I even tried making my own kite, with the help of a patient artisan, and it turned out to be one of the most fulfilling activities of the day.

Flying My Own Kite: A Joyful Challenge

After crafting my kite, it was time to put it to the test. I joined the crowd of kite enthusiasts, young and old, on the field. The locals, always welcoming, shared tips and cheered me on. It took a few tries, but when my kite finally soared into the sky, the feeling was exhilarating. Shouting “Kai Po Che!” as I successfully cut another kite added to the thrill. It’s moments like these that make the festival so special.

Evening Elegance: Music, Dance, and Lights

As the day transitioned into evening, the festival’s charm only grew. The cultural performances, featuring traditional Gujarati music and dance, created a magical atmosphere. Watching the Garba dancers in their vibrant costumes swirl gracefully to the rhythmic beats was mesmerizing. I couldn’t resist clapping along and soaking in the joyful energy.

The Enchanting Glow of Illuminated Kites

The highlight of the evening was the illuminated kite display. As darkness fell, the sky came alive with glowing kites that looked like floating stars. It was a surreal sight, made even more spectacular by the fireworks that lit up the night. Standing there, surrounded by people gazing at the sky with wonder, I felt a deep sense of connection to the community and the moment.

Why I Keep Coming Back

Every year, the Kite Festival manages to offer something new while retaining the magic that makes it so beloved. This year, it was the sense of unity and joy that stood out to me the most. From flying my kite alongside strangers who felt like friends to sharing laughs and stories over plates of delicious food, the festival is a reminder of the simple pleasures that bring us together.
